A Message To Our Team & Family

April 28, 2015

Dear KIPP Baltimore Parents,

We wanted to reach out about the recent events in our city we all witnessed last night and the sadness and pain many of us are feeling.

The safety of our students, teachers and families is our biggest concern. We are happy to report that, to the best of our knowledge, all of our children and families are safe.   In the coming days, we hope your family remains together and safe.

In addition, we want to reiterate our commitment at KIPP to peaceful protest. Our students have been leaders in this area—having successfully led a peaceful march back in December in response to events in Ferguson and New York. We will continue to support our students and staff to effectively address the injustice we all see and feel. To that end, if you are interested in learning more about how to get involved, please contact Sherrell Savage, Manager of Community Engagement, at ssavage@kippbaltimore.org or 410-220-8007.

There have been reports that some of our middle school students may have been involved in last night's activities. Our leadership team is reviewing the facts to determine what response is appropriate.

When school reopens, we are committed to supporting our students so they can process these current events. At KIPP Harmony, this will happen in their classrooms in the morning. At KIPP Ujima, the School Administrators will be facilitating discussions in Social Studies classes. We will also have mental health specialists available to students who need additional support.

We recognize that continual support is necessary for our students and community to heal and we will continue to work towards peace and justice.

We are so proud of the many students, families, and teachers that were out in Park Heights this morning already helping with the clean-up.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kate, Natalia, and Mike
